Madrid Lodging is a private home which originally served as the first Madrid schoolhouse. Later, after the larger stone school was built down by the ballpark, this building was used by the coal company as its employees' club. The old opera house--long-gone--stood next door, and the old adobe church (now a private residence) is right behind us. Out front is eleven acres of open space, containing the arroyo (which runs with rainwater only during the summer monsoons) and the old abandoned rail bed, great for morning walks! A wooden footbridge leads you across the arroyo to the main drag of Madrid's galleries and shops--quite literally just a two-minute walk away.
Madrid Lodging's wide front porch is graced by fluttering Tibetan prayer flags, and glass chimes tinkle from the fruit trees in our yard. Whether you prefer the big bench on the porch or the shaded hammock or small cafe table with chairs in the yard, you're welcome to read or relax out front and enjoy the peace, quiet, and solitude as we do!
Our warm and welcoming historic home has been restored by local craftspeople in true Madrid style. We especially enjoy our bright, beautiful kitchen where we prepare a full, healthy breakfast for you each morning using fresh, organic, and local ingredients. We'll serve you at the large dining table in our main room--surrounded by antiques and beautiful art from northern New Mexico artists. We love the huge Ortiz Mountain landscape painted by our friend David Copher, and the slab-clay wall pieces by renowned Santa Fe artist Patricia Naylor. A mahogany 1903 grand piano dominates the far end of the room.
Our breakfasts all start with fresh-squeezed orange juice and coffee or tea. (We often have home-brewed chai, so if that's something you like, please ask!) Baked goods range from homemade buttermilk biscuits to yummy scones to the tortillas we make here by hand for our breakfast burritos. Egg dishes could be individual quiches with green chile and cheese, or omelets filled with fresh, local veggies--everything depends on what's fresh and inspiring. (We love our organic chicken sausage or local bacon, too!) With advance notice, we will be happy to do our best to accommodate any special dietary requests; please let us know when you make your reservation.
Your suite is on the first floor of the main house, with its own private entrance and parking right by your door.
Your bedroom is furnished with a queen bed with a wrought-iron headboard and plush comforters and pillows. Your roomy and bright private bathroom has a shower and soft robes, plus slippers and extra towels to use on a trip to our outdoor hot tub. The hot tub is right outside your room, next to your spacious deck--private and secluded, clothing optional is the local custom!
Your sitting room has a small cafe table and chairs, and a refrigerator and microwave. A twin-sized daybed and a full-sized futon can be outfitted with sheets, blanket and pillows, making this suite perfect for a family or a small group of friends traveling together. The room has a DVD player/VCR, as well as a CD player/radio. Wireless internet access is available throughout the house.
For longer stays, please inquire about the old pottery studio, now converted into a bright casita. Located behind the main house, it has a full kitchen and bath with a sleeping loft.
Our true enjoyment of our guests is our greatest asset, and our wish is to share the lifestyle that we love. We look forward to helping you make the most of your visit to our area!
