The town of Madrid is hosting an opening day celebration for the newly renovated Grandstand in the Oscar Huber Memorial Ballpark on Monday, May 30 (Memorial Day).
Entertainment will start at 10 a.m. At 11 a.m., guest speakers include state Rep. Rhonda King and state Sen. Phil Griego. A presentation from the Madrid Landowners Association follows, with the ribbon cutting ceremony and color guard presentation at noon.
The Madrid Miners and East Mountain Riff Raff will then play in the 29th Annual Ballgame, a Memorial Day tradition in Madrid. The fields will be groomed and the teams will be dressed in traditional uniforms.
The newly renovated grandstand mirrors the original structure built around 1920 and is thought to have been the first electrically lit ballpark west of the Mississippi River. The new grandstand includes beams from the original structure and the original announcer’s booth.
