Color and Light In Gypsy Plaza right across from the Mineshaft Tavern

"color & light"  is a gallery filled with the work of 38 artists whose works reflect the magic of life.  The artists in the gallery are all living in New Mexico (except for one).  Paintings, pottery, jewelry, The Best Selection of Cards, New Mexico Made Soap, prints, collage, and photography are included in this whimsical mix.

You are invited to see the Hand Painted Photographs of Marilyn Conway (Mountainair, NM).  Marilyn captures New Mexico in a Black and White Photograph, Sepia tones the photograph and, in selected areas of the image, Hand Paints with Photographic Oil Paints.  Another world is created in Marilyn's PinHole Camera Photographs of serene Still Life pieces.  Original Hand Painted Photographs, Giclee Prints, Smaller $38. prints and cards are available so you can take home a piece of New Mexico to fit your wall and wallet !

Norma Kwestel (Albuquerque, NM) transforms Acrylic on Canvas into a luminous statement of New Mexico.  Houses on a hill from Madrid, NM, the Rio Grande Gorge, Chili Harvests, creatures of earth and sky pair up together along a New Mexico dusty road and we are at once transported into a sun-drenched world.  Prints and cards of Norma's paintings are also available ($38. and $3.)

Peggy Engel's Assemblages are more than the sophisticated placement of "found objects".  Peggy's Assemblages are brilliantly fashioned stories of the history of "junk".  As Peggy says in her Artist's Statement, "So much lovely Junque, so little time."  Vintage photographs are paired with small Apothecary Bottles with a dash of Peggy's own Hand Painted Tiles to create a very special world of magic.  For the Dress-Up in all of us, Peggy has created small Assemblage Pins ($18. each).  Peggy Engel lives in Albuquerque, NM.

Susan M. Kelly's new series of Mixed Media and Collage melds the mystery of the East with the contemporary design of the grid.  Lush colors of deep gold, intense turquoise, and vibrant reds are intertwined with text.  Various luminous paints enhance these pieces to create miniature dreamlike worlds.
Susan lives and works in Madrid, NM.

The Crystalline Glaze Pottery of Sunny Bueck (Albuquerque, NM), is functional art at its very finest.  This is a centuries' old technique, originating in China.  Sunny begins with a Porcelain Hand-thrown vase or bowl.  Then, using the Crystalline Glaze on the vessel, she places the glazed piece in the kiln at a very high temperature to set the piece.  The temperature is dropped several hundred degrees to the narrow range of temperatures where crystals can form.  The crystals then "grow".  As results are impossible to repeat, no two pieces are ever the same.  As Sunny states in her Artist's Statement: "Crystalline glaze is a marriage of science and art".  Sunny's Crystalline Glaze pieces range from $55. on up, depending on the size of the piece.

These are a few of the artists in "color & light".

The name "color & light" was chosen because "this is why I moved here to New Mexico", (states suzy kelly, owner).  "There is a magic and special quality of light to simply BEING in New Mexico.  The wide open spaces, the intense warmth of light that brings out all the colors of the rainbow, and the earth, this exquisite earth that is always around us - all of this has captured my heart !
