On Saturday December 6th the Village of Madrid, New Mexico will kick off Christmas in Madrid and celebrate the century old lights of Madrid tradition. This day-long celebration features live performances, workshops and activities, holiday shopping, dazzling light displays and the annual Christmas parade.
Each year, Christmas in Madrid attracts thousands of visitors eager to explore our village community. In addition to festivities on December 6, a variety of special pop-up activities will also take place throughout the month.
Christmas in Madrid December 6th Festivities
Noon – 2pm: Visit Mad Antiquer Christmas Village in the Courtyard to take holiday photos and enjoy a spread of food, live music, and the opportunity to meet Santa Claus!
Noon – 4pm: Live entertainment including music acts, street performers from Clan Tynker Family Circus, Holiday Carolers, and more.
3 – 6pm: KMRD’s 3rd Annual Community Art Show Fundraiser, featuring radio-inspired ornaments and hanging pieces available for purchase with proceeds benefiting the radio station
4pm: Madrid Christmas Parade along Main Street followed by the annual lighting of the town, a tradition that dates back over one-hundred years
Many local businesses will be hosting activities and entertainment throughout the day and evening
HISTORY OF Christmas in Madrid
Christmas in Madrid began in the early 1900s when the town, then a coal-mining community, created a massive, electrified Christmas light display to boost morale. Known as the "Christmas City," the display drew visitors from across the country eager to view the famous incandescent bulbs and lit-up wooden cutouts. When the town and mining company closed in 1956, the celebration ended until the mid-70’s when the artists who had moved into the [then] ghost town revived the tradition along with the parade.
Parking on December 6 will be available at the ballpark.
